Request an EvaluationADHD in adults is real — and it's massively underdiagnosed
For years, ADHD was thought of as a childhood condition that boys grew out of. We now know that is simply not true. Millions of adults — particularly women — are living with undiagnosed ADHD, having spent decades being told they were lazy, scattered, too sensitive, or not trying hard enough.
If you've spent your life feeling like your brain works differently — struggling with focus, time management, follow-through, emotional regulation, or chronic overwhelm despite genuinely trying — ADHD may be the explanation you've never been given.
At Open Door Psychiatry, we provide thorough, unhurried ADHD evaluations for adults across New York State. We take your concerns seriously from the first conversation — no dismissal, no waiting years for answers.
All appointments are conducted via HIPAA-compliant secure video — available to adults across Long Island, Nassau County, Suffolk County, New York City, and all of New York State.
Signs of ADHD in adults that often go unrecognized
ADHD in adults looks different from the hyperactive child stereotype. You might have ADHD if you frequently experience:
- Difficulty sustaining focus on tasks — especially ones that feel boring or repetitive
- Starting many projects but struggling to finish them
- Chronic procrastination despite genuine intention to get things done
- Losing track of time, missing deadlines, or consistently running late
- Forgetfulness — misplacing items, forgetting appointments, losing train of thought
- Emotional dysregulation — feeling things intensely, quick frustration, difficulty recovering from setbacks
- Overwhelm when faced with multiple tasks or decisions
- Hyperfocus — becoming completely absorbed in things you find interesting while everything else falls away
- A persistent sense of not living up to your potential despite your best efforts
ADHD in women is particularly underdiagnosed. Women more commonly present with inattentive ADHD — characterized by internal restlessness, people-pleasing, and masking — rather than the hyperactive presentation most diagnostic criteria were built around.
What our ADHD evaluation includes
Step 1 — Comprehensive Clinical Interview
Your provider will conduct a thorough diagnostic interview covering your developmental history, current symptoms, academic and work history, relationships, and how ADHD symptoms are showing up in your daily life. This is not a quick checklist — it is a real conversation.
Step 2 — Standardized Rating Scales
You'll complete validated ADHD rating scales and symptom questionnaires that give your provider a structured, evidence-based picture of your presentation alongside the clinical interview.
Step 3 — Differential Diagnosis
ADHD symptoms can overlap with anxiety, depression, trauma, and sleep disorders. Your provider will carefully consider the full picture to ensure an accurate diagnosis — because the right treatment starts with the right answer.
Step 4 — Your Care Plan
Following your evaluation, your provider will share their findings and discuss your personalized care plan — which may include medication management, behavioral strategies, therapy, or a combination of all three.
How we treat ADHD at Open Door
Medication Management
Stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD medications can be highly effective for many adults. Our providers prescribe carefully, start conservatively, and monitor your response closely — adjusting dosage and medication type until your treatment is optimized for you.
Individual Therapy
Therapy for ADHD — particularly CBT adapted for ADHD — helps you build practical skills around time management, organization, emotional regulation, and self-compassion. It addresses the years of shame and self-doubt that often accompany late ADHD diagnoses.
Integrated Care
For many adults with ADHD — especially those with co-occurring anxiety or depression — a combination of medication and therapy produces the best outcomes. At Open Door, both are available in-house and fully coordinated.
A note on ADHD in women
ADHD presents differently in women — and as a result, women are diagnosed on average several years later than men, often only after years of compensating, masking, and being told they simply need to try harder.
Women with ADHD are more likely to present with inattentive symptoms — internal restlessness, emotional sensitivity, difficulty with executive function, and chronic overwhelm — rather than the external hyperactivity that most people associate with ADHD.
Our women-of-color–led team has specific experience and sensitivity in evaluating and treating ADHD in women, including women who have spent years receiving other diagnoses — anxiety, depression, burnout — without anyone considering ADHD as the underlying driver.
If this resonates with you, we want to hear your story.
